Searching The Database

PreviousIntroducing The Junkipedia Monitoring SystemNextFollowing Public Lists

Last updated 1 year ago

The monitoring system collects content based on and stores each piece of content as a "post" in Junkipedia's database. The collected posts can then be more narrowly searched within the database. To search posts that have been collected by the monitoring system, see the top row of search and filter options and the explanation of each option described below.

Search Box

If you enter keywords in the search box, the search with attempt to find posts relevant to all of the keywords.

Boolean Search and Transcript Text Search

This feature allows the following operations to be included in the search string.

  • + signifies AND operation

  • | signifies OR operation

  • ( and ) signify precedence

  • - signifies NOT operation

  • " quotes a literal string to signify a phrase for searching

NOTE: Boolean operators “OR” “AND” will not work in the Junkipedia monitoring system.

Select the arrow next to “search posts” and check “Boolean Search Operators” to enable. You can also search for your terms in available transcripts by checking “Transcript Text.”

Sort Order

The search results can be ordered starting with newest, oldest, or highest engagement.

Platform

Under the Platform drop down menu, select which social media sites you’d like to search. If you don't specify any platforms, posts from all of them will be considered.

Date Range

You can select a date range for how far back in time you want to search. Only posts newer than this limit will be included in the search results.

List Selection

Select any number of lists from this drop down menu to narrow the search to posts collected by certain lists. If no lists are specified, all posts in the database will be searched regardless of lists that caused them to be collected.

Post Type

Use this drop down menu to limit the search results to posts of one of the following types or allow all types.

  • Photo: The primary content of the post is any image or photograph.

  • Video: The primary content of the post is a video.

  • Link: The post includes a URL.

  • Status: The post includes only a text status update.

  • Document: The primary content of the post is an uploaded document (like a .pdf file)

  • Audio: The primary content of the post is an audio recording.

  • Podcast: The primary content is a podcast.

Language

You can select which language(s) you would like included in search results. If no languages are selected, all languages will be included.

Engagement Range

You can set an upper and lower bounds on the popularity of posts you want to include in the search results. Junkipedia checks engagement statistics provided by the platforms.

Exclude

If you don’t want a particular type of post to appear in search results, you can elect to exclude replies, advertisements, or posts.

Transcripts

You can elect to search posts that have an available transcript, or do not have an available transcript. If “Has Transcript” is selected, Junkipedia will return only posts that have associated transcripts that contain your search terms.

Add Filters

Many channels in the Junkipedia system have been assigned certain attributes. For example, the Twitter account of a Democratic politician from New York would have the attributes “Democratic” and “New York.” You can elect to add additional filters for available attributes like U.S. state, party affiliation, or candidate status.

Save Search

Click this button to save and reuse these search criteria under a name that you provide. All of your saved searches are listed in the left side panel. If the browser window is narrow, the left panel may appear hidden. You can open the panel by clicking on the 3 parallel lines icon at the top left of your window.

Sort Order

The search results can be sorted by newest, oldest, or highest engagement. You can also elect to sort posts randomly, which can be useful in certain circumstances where many people on your team are monitoring the same search results.

See the glossary entry for detailed examples.
